I was so overjoyed at all the wonderful exhibits I saw at a private tour of MAD | Museum of Arts and Design's Barbie Exhibition recently
, but it was this one in particular that got me emotional. If you don't know the history, Mattel created the "Miss Astronaut" doll in 1965. While the first woman went to space in 1963, NASA did not allow women to join their astronaut corps until 1978 but Barbie started her astronaut career when it was generally not possible for women to do so. Very excited to see this exhibit dedicate an entire section to Barbie in Aviation and Space! Children believe what they see. It's what I love about doll play and exposing children to STEM and other careers considered out of reach at a young age.
